Silver lining for gay couple

Tonight's post will err to the nerdy side a bit, so bear with me for a while. To the readers that had forsaken biology field for a long time, try to google anything that you don't understand or you could ask in the comment. It's just that I feel this is something really nice to share with ^^

As some of u guys knew, I'll be doing my masters in stem cell. Currently, I have to do a lot of journal readings every single day. Today, I chanced upon one interesting journal that I believe would somehow change the society perception on us. Maybe it will, that's what I thought when I finished reading it.

Apparently, there had been new discovery made in the stem cell field where we could revert back adult cell back to pluripotent stem cell. In other words, we could just take your cell from skin, cheek or fat and change it back to almost its original state, something they termed induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC). From this iPSC, we could produce limited type of cell like your neuron, bone, kidney, skin graft though it is still in laboratory testing.

Now, they are trying to revert iPSC further back the cell line which mean they want to change it back to its original state, the totipotent stem cell. From this totipotent cell, we could practically make ANY cell on your body and, here's the interesting part, even sperm or ovum, the two cell that create us in the 1st place.

Why did I think this discovery is very interesting? Well, it means we could just take cell from one person, change it back to totipotent cell, make it into ovum and sperm and voila, you get two germ cell from one source irregardless of your gender. This opens up two possibility, self and same-sex fertilisation.

Self fertilisation means we make ovum or sperm from your cell, either one that u don't have, and fuse it with your own sperm/ovum. So, it sort of we make a clone of you.

Same-sex fertilisation means if you and your boyfriend want a child, we take a cell from your partner and change it into ovum and then we fuse it with your sperm and place it in surrogate mother to conceive it. After  9 months, the baby will be born without any need of a female during the fertilisation stage.

I know the research is still a decade early to call it a success. There is still a lot of factors they need to take into account and make it into pure stem cell. There be heck of debate going around in the future for its application and I'm pretty sure there will be a lot of opposition against such method.

But face it, with this research, gay couple can finally has their own baby without any need for adoption or foster care.
