Not sure if I have talked bout this before but it popped into my mind recently after few 'skirmishes' with him.......well, more than a few but yeah, lots enough to make me think about it again. Sometimes, I wonder if it's a good thing to not change this particular, peculiar habit of mine.
Because you see, I always like to be the devil's advocate in any sort of argument most of the time especially with someone I'm comfortable to talk with. I don't necessarily agree with the argument I put forth but for the sake of lengthening the argument process(and also having something to talk about), I will take up the unconventional and unpopular view and make it seems like that is the view I hold on to.
It's fun to be one and test how far the other person can go in defending his belief/view without 'kowtowing' to my 'view' but you need to know how to play the card well. Too stiff with your view, the other side might just back off out of frustration of not being able to 'convince' you at all while too lenient will make him think he already won and won't continue arguing anymore.
The key is to try to keep in the middle and put forth an alternative view that he overlooks and something plausible. It's like saying "I agree with that but how bout xxx instead of yyy? I don't see why you can't consider xxx since it isn't that bad of an option as well."
Putting myself as a devil's advocate is a fun but can be pretty tiring over time. You need to be familiarize with different sides to an argument which mean it involves a lot of reading and listening for understanding. Plus, you might overstep the boundary every now and then and makes him feel offended with your view.
With him, I have been doing it like 90% of the time =,= Sorry Bii but I suppose I just like to hear you talk more and see you get agitated to explain to me. I'll try not to make your blood boil too often and be a quiet, obedient puppy once a while to you =P teehee
Love
me
